PROCEEDINGS OF “ADVANCES IN PULMONARY REHABILITATION” Biology of muscle impairment in COPD

چکیده
Peripheral muscle dysfunction is a common manifestation of advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and several other chronic diseases. Although the importance of this problem has been overlooked for several years, recent research indicates that peripheral muscle dysfunction may have important clinical consequences such as impaired functional status [1], poor quality of life [2], and reduced survival [3] independently of the impairment in lung function. In this brief summary of a presentation that was done at the 4th International conference on advances in pulmonary rehabilitation and management of chronic respiratory failure, we will insist on the clinical relevance and possible mechanisms of peripheral muscle wasting in patients with COPD although we recognize that the peripheral muscle in this disease is not only affected in quantity but also in quality.

Comparing the Effect of Resistive Inspiratory Muscle Training and Incentive Spirometry on Respiratory Pattern of COPD patients
Background: Resistive Inspiratory Muscle Training (RIMT) is a well-known technique for rehabilitation of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Incentive spirometry is another technique with potential viability for this application, but there is limited evidence in support of its efficacy in the rehabilitation of COPD patients. Aim: The objective of this study was to compar...

متن کاملEffect of Home-based Pulmonary Rehabilitation on Daily Activity of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation is an important part of treatment in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) with the goal of achieving and maintaining maximum functional independence since this disease causes symptoms including fatigue, and consequently decrease in daily living activity. Aim: To determine the effect of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation on daily living...
متن کاملVitamin D status and distribution in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease versus healthy controls
Background: Vitamin D has a potential to modulate inflammatory response against noxious particles in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present study was conducted to determine the status of serum vitamin D in COPD versus healthy group. Methods: The patients presented to the outpatient pulmonary clinic of Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital, Babol Iran. Diagnosis of...
متن کاملExercise and muscle dysfunction in COPD: implications for pulmonary rehabilitation.
Skeletal muscle dysfunction in COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) patients, particularly of the quadriceps, is of clinical interest because it not only influences the symptoms that limit exercise, but may also contribute directly to poor exercise performance and health status, increased healthcare utilization, and mortality. Furthermore, unlike the largely irreversible impairment of t...
